98' 4/4 #2 Common Butternut
Pick this package up to supplement our #1Com butternut classified, or take it on its own. This was sorted as #2Com by our inspector and priced to sell at $1.40/bf. From what I've read, butternut machines well with both hand and power tools and is supposed to be a great wood for carving. Perhaps a creative and crafty individual could build jewelry or trinket boxes from this material. Maybe you've got another idea. 364' 8/4 #1 Common Butternut
In addition to the load of 4/4 butternut that our inspector sorted through, we've also got some 8/4 material in the same condition. This 364bf package runs 6-8' in length and graded by our inspector Mike as #1Com. Commonly used for furniture, I've read that butternut does, in fact, resemble American black walnut. It's just not quite as dark. We'll sell this package partial or whole for just $2.75/bf. $1001.00

200' 8/4 #2 Common Butternut
So here's a classified for the #2 Com 8/4 butternut. This package has 200 bf of 6'-8' material and at $1.75/bf it is a dollar less per board foot than the #1Com listed above. The right craftsman might be able to put this package to use in furniture parts or cabinetry, or maybe cut it up for carving. S&B 8/4 sells for $9.92/bf for 100bf. Compared to that, $1.75 for #1Com seems like a steal... Come by and have a look for yourself; you be the judge. $350.00

As clear as Mother Nature grows it, this C & Better Alaskan Yellow Cedar is beautiful. Normally found along the Pacific coast in Alaska and British Columbia, or in the Cascade Range of Oregon and Washington, Alaskan Cedar is worth your consideration. This tree is one of the slowest growing conifers in the Northwest making its wood extremely durable and excellent for a number specialty uses. So why is it so expensive?
Just like the best white hard maple comes from Northern Michigan, the best cherry comes from the Allegheny National Forest. The annual cherry harvest has been dropped from 100 million board feet to 20 million board feet. Meanwhile, the demand has remained very strong.

So how do I get the red cherry I want?
If your project doesn't need long pieces (bigger than 3-4') DON'T buy Select and Better. There will be more red color and you won't be paying the premium for large clear cuttings.

• It has holes like Swiss cheese. All the cuttings (the parts used to determine grade) have to be sound and to be a worm hole must be 1/8" or smaller.
• "Soft" means "soft" like pine. Actually "soft" means "soft" compared to hard maple. This ain't no wimpy lumber!!!

100' 5/4 #1 & Better Wormy Soft Maple 9-10'. Tom Faxed a copy of his bunk bed plans and called to discuss the choice of wood. Cherry - too expensive, White Oak - too hard, Pine - too soft but he liked the character... he then decided on Wormy Soft Maple. Compared to Pine, Soft Maple is hard. It is only soft when compared to Hard Maple and the coloration with the addition of some worm-holes added just the character Tom wanted for the bunk bed. A 100' was more material than he needed, but bought it to get the price break and planned to build a chest with the extra. When he said, "I can't believe I got this much lumber for $182!", I thought it was time to raise the price, but decided to write a classifed instead. $182 13 0402 45

Tired of paying the high price for South American mahogany? Why dont you try Sapele instead? I've learned enough about Sapele that convinced me to try it and now I'm telling you to give Sapele a chance. It's heartwood color is brown or light reddish brown that darkens beautifully with age to a deeper brown. Grown in Africa, Sapele machines beautifully yet is comparable to Oak in strength, making it much stronger than its look alike South American (Swietenia) or African (Khaya) mahogany. With all these fine points going for it, I think it's enough to convince you that Sapele is right for you too! This plain sawn package is already ripped on one edge and surface to 3/4".
