We offer beginning and intermediate classes on fully utilizing the multitude of woodworking possibilities with lathes, routers and more. Give us a call to sign up and learn a new tecnique or fine tune your current skills.

relief carving:

Fred Erbisch of Greater Lansing Woodcarvers will provide materials, equipment and instruction on Relief Carving. These two-hour classes are designed to teach students basic carving techniques and safety tips. Carve and take home this cute Duckbill Platypus with Easter Egg to paint. Then use your new carving skills on your own creations. Those 13 and under need parental supervision.

 

Instructor Ernie Schuette is a member of Greater Lansing Woodcarvers.

CLASS LEVEL: Beginning
CLASS LENGTH: Classes are 2 hours long.

PREREQUISITE: No previous carving experience is required.

TOPICS COVERED: Basic carving techniques and safety tips.

 

TURN A WOODEN BOWL:

This two-day class is designed to teach the student how to turn a bowl from a green block of wood. The long-grind bowl gouge cuts can be so clean that sanding usually begins with 120 or 180 grit sandpaper.

 

Ernie Schuette (517-775-2166) will confirm all class dates with each participant prior to the class.
Maximum class size is three.

LOCATION: Classes are at Johnson’s Workbench (800-292-5937) in Charlotte, MI
CLASS LEVEL: Beginning
CLASS LENGTH: Classes begin at 9am both days and run until 3:00 to 4:00pm.
COST: $150
PREREQUISITE: No previous turning experience is required.
BRING: All class materials provided, however, students are encouraged to bring their own tools for sharpening, use or discussion. A bowl gouge can either be purchased or borrowed (wait for the discussion at class to determine the correct bowl gouge to purchase). Students should wear short sleeve’s (safety).
TOPICS COVERED: Lathe and Tool Safety; how to obtain and prepare wood blanks; tool selection; sharpening; the different methods for mounting a wood blank on the lathe; how to push cut, pull cut, and shear (angel hair) cut with the bowl gouge; sanding (power and hand) and finishing options. The first day is focused on learning the cuts and how to manipulate the bowl blank on the lathe. The second day is independently (with some guidance) making your bowl from start to finish. Unlike many woodworking projects, handsome turned wooden bowls can be made in a short amount of time, and prove both artful and functional. This class is a fun and rewarding way to learn the simple pleasures of woodturning.

CLASS LENGTH: 4 Hours
COST: $45
PREREQUISITE: None
BRING: Your scrapers, gouges, and skews. Tools available for purchase day of class.
TOPICS COVERED: Basics of grinders, grinding wheel selection and setup, various jigs and their application (with emphasis on the Wolverine Grinding System), specific techniques to sharpen scrapers, gouges, and skews.

 

OVAL FRAMES CLASS:

CLASS LEVEL: Intermediate
CLASS LENGTH: 4 Hours
COST: $50
PREREQUISITE: Router Class I, or basic experience with a router.
BRING: A router. Tools available for purchase day of class.
TOPICS COVERED: In this class you learn to build a jig to cut an oval frame with a router. This shop-built fixture will allow you to build various sizes of oval frames.

 

ROUTER CLASS I:

PREREQUISITE: None
Bring: A router. Tools available for purchase day of class.
TOPICS COVERED: This workshop will cover the basic uses of the router, including selecting the correct router and bits for various woodworking applications.

 

ROUTER CLASS II:

CLASS LEVEL: Intermediate
CLASS LENGTH: 4 Hours

PREREQUISITE: Router Class I, or beginning router experience.
BRING: A router. Tools available for purchase day of class.
TOPICS COVERED: This class will cover the many uses of the router table. You will also learn to cut circles and dados, using various shop-built jigs and fixtures.

 

WOOD TURNING GUILD MEETINGS:

LOCATION & DATE: Johnson's Workbench, Charlotte MI location. The first Saturday of each month, September through May. Guild does not meet in June, July and August. For more details call 800-292-5937 ext: 313.
TIME: 11:00 am.
TOPICS COVERED: A great opportunity to share ideas, and tips for wood turning projects.
